Temperature-controlled medication cupboards – in the new Rütibühl building of the Martin Foundation

Well-equipped for the future

The newly opened Rütibühl building of the Martin Foundation, inaugurated in May 2024, offers 32 residential and day structure places for people with disabilities. Most residents are older individuals with dementia-related developments, as well as people with severe forms of autism and challenging behaviors.

Located at the edge of the forest in Herrliberg, with a stunning view of the mountains, the four barrier-free buildings are equipped with a special signage system that also enables people with dementia to navigate independently. The new building, consisting of four residential groups, also includes a cafeteria, a multipurpose room, a senior citizens’ club, various workshops, and spacious, professionally designed ward rooms.

Each ward room offers two ergonomically equipped workspaces and ample storage space for consumables and residents’ medications. To ensure storage meets legal requirements, the management opted for temperature-controlled medication cupboards. In these cupboards, medications are stored in week trays. This guarantees compliant storage even during summer temperatures above 30 °C, offering greater safety for both residents and staff responsible for medication administration.

Karine Lapeta, head of the senior living groups Topas and Rubin, especially values the flexible use of the cabinet. Medications can be clearly arranged by resident in week trays. At Rütibühl, medications are prepared once a week by the respective care teams on a rotating basis. This ensures that all team members gain extensive expertise in medication management and can provide holistic care.

Currently, medications are compactly stored in week trays inside the temperature-controlled medication cupboards. The furnishing solutions installed by Wiegand at Rütibühl offer ample space for all residential groups and can be used flexibly as needed. “You’ll never run out of space,” says Karine Lapeta, who greatly values this forward-thinking investment.

Changes on the horizon:

A transition is already planned – later this year, the facility intends to switch to machine-prepared pouch blisters for medication management. Thanks to the well-designed cupboard concept, this transition can be implemented without modifying the existing cupboard system. This was made possible through close collaboration between the client and Wiegand.

Viviva Baar chooses Wiegand

The air-conditioned medication cabinets are a great solution for Viviva Baar, as installing climate control in the ward rooms would have been structurally complex and expensive. The team at Viviva Baar is pleased with this solution.
“We are now well prepared to meet the changing climate conditions and the accompanying regulations of the medication control authorities.”
